WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

When you mention hypnosis to most people, they immediately think of Dracula movies, mind control gurus, secret government black operations and especially stage hypnotists. In a nutshell, hypnosis is the process of entering and directing the hypnotic trance state. And what is a trance state? It's like when you're in a really good daydream and someone asks you a question and you don't even hear that person speaking, you're off in la-la land. So, that's all a trance is; the whole world around you just seems to disappear and you go off into your own little world.

So let's say a hypnotist is telling you a story and you get so wrapped up in the tale, you start drifting into your own little world. At this point the hypnotist will start talking to you in a way that should allow the hypnotist to take you into a certain direction. A hypnotist can't make you do anything you don't want to do, but depending on their level of expertise, they can move you in a direction that doesn't contradict your basic beliefs or opinions.

The type of hypnosis we talk about is conversational hypnosis. There are no rituals or hypnotic incantations recited to put someone into a trance as in traditional hypnosis. The whole thing takes place within a normal conversation. This type of hypnosis is performed permissively and involves a mutual cooperation between the hypnotist and the subject. With this type of hypnosis the person doesn't even know he is being hypnotized. He is just having a normal conversation. This allows almost anyone to become hypnotized to some degree when using these techniques.
